As was mentioned the difference is that the Summit HC has a barometric altimeter and electronic, magnetic compass. Can't quite stretch the budget for a Colorado though.That is a very good price for the Venture HC. Guess I'm gonna have to spend the extra $50 and get what I really want. Eliminating the need for those and carrying a compass and national forest service fire map would be very hand when hiking. In the city I end up hitting mapquest or a like site. In the country I only need a map to get around. I definitely like the auto route and compass features. Or if you really want to go to town, take a look at the Colorado range - but that is another story. Whatever you do, make sure you get one of the new models with a high sensitivity receiver (as indicated by the "H" in the "HC" or "HCx" model designation.) This makes a huge difference compared to the ability of the older models to hold a signal under dense vegetation etc.
(As far as I can tell, they are functionally identical, apart from the auto-routing capability and memory expansion.) If you think you might regret either of these limitations, go for the Vista HCx, if your budget will stretch that far. If you can truly live without auto-routing and expandable memory, then you will be very happy with the Summit HC. Auto-routing ain't much use to me in the middle of the Australian Outback or the high Peruvian Andes - and the available maps aren't all that extensive either!) (I use my GPSr for things other than geocaching - like site investigations for remote mining projects etc. True, you don't really NEED them, but I think they are both really useful tools, and use them all the time. Opinions by geocachers on these forums seem to be divided on the value of the barometric altimeter and the compass. Other options you might check out in the eTrex range include the Venture HC (same as the Summit HC, but no barometric altimeter or compass), and the Legend HCx (same as the Venture HC, no barometric altimeter, no compass, but includes expandable memory and auto-routing). If you want auto-routing, you will also need to go for the Vista HCx (or similar). (One advantage of being limited to "only" 24 MB RAM is that it takes very little time to create and load a whole new set of maps - much quicker than filling a 2 GB SD card - but you would only need to do that once!) Vista HCx) will mean you can load pretty well everything at once. Not a major issue, since I generally travel with my laptop, so I can upload maps at any time, but a unit with SD card capability (e.g. I manage to get all the maps for my local region that I am interested in (South-East Queensland, road maps and topo maps) loaded at one go, but when I am travelling further afield, I have to load a new set of maps. I am a Neocacher as well and I am looking at the Vista HCX? I just wish it also had automatic routing for road driving.ĭo any of you have on of these? Would you recommend it for a newbie? I like all the functions it has, and the price. Except the functionality of a more expensive device. I'd like to try out geocaching more and am thinking about the Garmin eTre Summit HC. BTW, for street use her GPS is impressive. We could find some more with it, but we like to head for the hills on weekends and her GPS just isn't rugged enough.
